‘True Blood’: HBO Hit Show About Vampires is in Early Stages of a Reboot

Vampires may be returning to the small screen. HBO’s reboot of True Blood is early in it’s development, with series original creator Alan Ball (Six Feet Under) and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Riverdale) attached to the project, according to The Hollywood Reporter

The new project is in its early stages, with Aguirre-Sacasa co-writing the pilot script for the planned reboot alongside Jami O’Brien (NOS4A2). Already a well established writer and executive producer within television, Aguirre-Sacasa writes and executive produces The CW shows Riverdale and Katy Keene, along with the Netflix original series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. He is also already working with HBO, as it was announced earlier this year he’s doing a reboot of the Freeform drama series Pretty Little Liars.

Ball, who was the creator of the original series, will now serve as an executive producer on the reported reboot. He wrote and directed the pilot and several other episodes of True Blood, along with serving as showrunner and executive producer.

True Blood originally aired on HBO from 2008-2014. It was a mega success for the network, with millions of viewers tuning in each week to find out what was going on in the little town of Bon Temps, Louisiana. In a world where there is synthetic blood for vampires to drink instead of human blood, they no longer have to hide in the shadows. The series starred Anna Paquin (Alias Grace), Stephen Moyer (The Gifted), Alexander Skarsgard (Big Little Lies), Nelsan Ellis (Elementary), Rutina Wesley (Queen Sugar), Sam Tremmell (Reckoning), and Deborah Ann Woll (Daredevil).

The series caused a revival of vampire obsession throughout pop culture. A horror fantasy show with romance sprinkled in, it was one of the biggest shows on TV during its run. Along with featuring vampires, the show also included werewolves, fairies, and just about any supernatural entity. The series was originally based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries novel series written by Charlaine Harris.

HBO has declined to comment on the reported reboot. True Blood is available to stream in its entirety on HBO Max.
