Tom Welling Says A ‘Smallville’ Animated Sequel Is In The Works

This past weekend, Ex-Smallville star Tom Welling (Cheaper By The Dozen) said at the FanExpo Convention in Vancouver alongside fellow Ex-Smallville star, Erica Durance, (House of the Dead) that an animated sequel to the TV show is indeed in the works, according to ComicBook.com. Welling played Clark Kent, also known as Superman, in the show from 2001-2011 while Durance played Lois Lane from 2004-2011.

Welling explained how things are coming together for the sequel, revealing he’s hopeful that Durance, Sam Jones III (Glory Road), and John Glover (Scrooged) will return, but sounded pessimistic about the return of Allison Mack (Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves!). Mack was arrested in 2019 and sentenced to three years in prison and then sentenced three years probation in 2021 for various crimes related to her affiliation with cult, ComicBook.com notes.

“We’re working on animated series that picks up right after our Smallville [finale] and… telling our own story,” Welling said, per ComicBook.com. “Our vision is that we get Erica. It might be tough to get Allison. But even Sam Jones III and Lionel Luthor (played by Glover) is going to be a big part of that. John Glover wants to do it, we’ve already been into this.”

Mack played Chloe Sullivan and Jones III played Pete Ross on the show from 2001-2011.

Welling also went on to caution that the shows creators, Alfred Gough (Spider-Man 2) and Miles Millar (I Am Number Four), are also currently working on other projects.

“We’ve already gotten animation, we just don’t have the stories yet because Al and Miles are busy doing Tim Burton-like movies,” Welling said via ComicBook.com. “As soon as they are done with that, we’re going to do this. I want to be Clark’s voice, I want Erica to be Lois’s voice. That’s going to be the fun of it. I think there’s a story that Al and Miles are going to tell that’s individual and new and call it a multiverse thing. But let’s see where it goes, and it’ll be fun, so yeah.”

According to ComicBook.com, there have been longstanding rumors of an animated sequel series for Smallville. While it doesn’t appear the new series will release in the near future, these remarks by Welling sound promising for the show’s future, even if the full cast doesn’t return.
