Tobias Menzies to Pull Double Duty on “Outlander”

Outlander, the upcoming Starz series based on Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling novels, has cast Tobias Menzies in two central roles.

The 16-episode series chronicles the adventures of Claire Randall, a married nurse in 1945 London who mysteriously travels back in time to 1743. Out of her element in the 18th century, she encounters Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall—an ancestor of her 20th century husband, Frank. Menzies will portray both Jonathan and Frank, but though the two look alike, they could not be more different. Whereas Frank is a historian with a particular interest in his own family tree, “Black Jack” is a British Army captain with dark and violent tendencies.

Menzies was most recently seen on Game of Thrones as Edmure Tully, Catelyn Stark’s brother. He has also appeared as Brutus on HBO’s Rome and had roles on The Shadow Line and Eternal Law.

Gabaldon tweeted about the news and acknowledged that the role fans are anticipating most, the lead part of Claire, has not yet been filled. More casting news can be expected soon, however; filming is scheduled to begin this fall for a 2014 premiere.
