It is almost here. In a surprise move this afternoon, HBO released a teaser for the third season of Succession. The show that has made watching the lavish lives of the elite an enjoyable experience is back and announced it in a big way.
The trailer, which runs for just over a minute and a half, ratchets up the drama for the Roy family with Succession’s classic theme song that has made the opening credits impossible to skip playing as a backdrop. The hard hitting melody does well to show the gravity of what is coming in the next season.
With the hostile takeover still squeezing Waystar Royco and Jeremy Strong’s (The Trail of the Chicago 7) Kendall betraying his father, the Roys are in a bind at the conclusion of the second season. The trailer highlights the tension among the family especially with the first scene. Kendall walks into the Waystar Royco headquarters and tries to calm the team, stating, “No drama. We’re good.” The nonchalant son is quickly cut off by his father, Brian Cox’ s (Manhunter) Logan Roy, screaming, “I’m gonna fucking kill him,” as he is held back by other members of the family.
Kendall and Logan are not the only ones highlighted in the trailer. Shivon Roy, played by Sarah Snook (Predestination), has her moments in the teaser including one of the most important reveals offered. Shiv might be switching to the dark side. With the family split onto Logan’s and Kendall’s sides, the only daughter of the family seems to be considering a switch to Kendall’s team.
The trailer runs as a greatest hits playlist for Succession with many scenes reminding the audience of what made the show so great. Fan favorites, Gregory Hirsch, played by Nicholas Braun (Sky High), and Tom Wambsgans, played by Matthew Macfadyen (Pride and Prejudice), are bringing their bromance back. The two, possibly on different sides in the family battle, give one of the funniest moments in the trailer. Tom tells Greg what is coming to him after his betrayal of the company. “Logan is going to fire a million poisonous spiders down your dickey.” Add it to the list of hilarious, graphic, and obscene remarks Tom has used.
Finally, Roman Roy, played by the magnificent Kieran Culkin (No Sudden Move), is reserved in the trailer. He does get a quick dig in at his brother, Kendall, before falling to the backdrop of the video. It seems that Succession will be keeping his role in the ensuing season under wraps.
