The American dream unravels rapidly and turns into a suburban horror show in the new trailer for the upcoming Amazon Prime Video series, Them, via Entertainment Weekly. Set in 1950s California, a Black family moves into an all-white neighborhood and quickly become terrorized by monsters both supernatural and human.
Little Marvin (Jack & Jill) is the series creator of Them and executive produces alongside writer and actress Lena Waithe (Master of None, Queen & Slim). The series stars Deborah Ayorinde (Luke Cage) and Ashley Thomas (Skin) as married couple Lucky and Henry Emory. Melody Hurt (Trick) and Shahadi Wright Joseph (Us) co-star as their two daughters Gracie and Ruby.
In the first full length trailer released on Monday, the Emorys are seen moving from rural North Carolina to Compton during what’s known as the Great Migration in search of a better life. Things then start off hopeful as they arrive in the picturesque town. Accompanied by the song “Home” sung by Diana Ross, her voice offers an eerie sense of calm before the storm.
The Emorys are instantly unwelcome by their neighbors, including the terrifying housewife Betty Wendell portrayed by Allison Pill (The Newsroom). She becomes the ring leader as she plots all the ways the neighborhood can taunt and torment the Emorys. But there are also supernatural elements to contend with inside the home, with the youngest daughter Gracie stating in the trailer: “There’s something bad in this house.”
A horror anthology series, each season will tell a new frightening tale. Subtitled Them: Covenant, the first season will premiere on Amazon Prime April 9. Miri Yoon (The Stand), Don Kurt (Amazing Stories), David Matthews (Vinyl), and Roy Lee (The Exorcist) also executive produce.
