ScreenRant has reported that Doctor Who spinoff, the War Between The Land And Sea showrunner Russel T. Davis (Torchwood, Doctor Who) has speculated on a possible future for the series despite its initial limited series categorization. The series sees the return of Doctor Who villains previously known as the Sea Devils, who vow to seek revenge on humanity for polluting their waters.
According to ScreenRant, the series will be the final co-production of the BBC and Disney+. The UK premiere will take place on December 7th on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, whereas international viewers can access the series via Disney+. This will not be the only dose of the Doctor Who universe fans will receive in the upcoming years, as a Christmas special has been pegged for 2026.
Radiotimes recently spoke with Davies, and he spoke on a possible future for The War Between Land And Sea. He stated it was “strictly a standalone series,” and “It’s a complete story – it absolutely ends… and I will say, stay tuned for the very end, keep watching.” via ScreenRant.
According to ScreenRant, Davies has stated that this iteration of the series comes to a conclusion. He does not explicitly state that there is no more story for these characters. Possibly, hinting at an anthology or a different group of villains. “That doesn’t mean… that sounds like the Doctor appears – that’s not what happens! But within the story, the credits start to roll… keep watching!”
Although Davies immediately shirks the idea of a Doctor Who appearance, his statement to watch til the end teases that he may be planning more Doctor Who-related content, via ScreenRant.
ScreenRant has reported that this would not be the first time a series originally billed as a limited series went on to have a longer run. The Mark Ruffalo (Spotlight, Avengers) led series Task originally had a limited series tag, but has now been announced for a second season.
According to ScreenRant, an anthology series with Kate Lethbridge-Stewart’s UNIT defending Earth against extraterrestrial threats could be an interesting way for Davies to continue the story.
ScreenRant has reported that for now fans can enjoy the planned mini-series as Homo Aqua and UNIT battle for supremacy. Russell Tovey’s (Plainclothes, The Good Liar) Barclay will attempt to negotiate peace between the two sides by using his relationship with the Homo Aqua.
