Renowned actor Dermot Mulroney (Shameless, New Girl) took a stand, literally, in support of the Writer’s Guild of America’s strike today on ABC’s hit news show The View. While Mulroney was promoting and discussing his new Disney+ Marvel series Secret Invasion, he symbolically walked off the set to show his support for striking writers.
According to Deadline, The View pre-tapes their Friday segments on Thursdays. Mulroney was kind and understanding of the situation by asking “are we going to break? I want to do this symbolically. In support and solidarity for the writers, I’m going to walk off your show. Thank you, I’ll see you on the picket lines.” As Mulroney left the stage he even turned to face the camera and gave a kind wave while saying, “love you, thank you.”
It did not seem surprising or shocking at all to co-hosts and even Joy Behar (Ice Age: Continental Drift, Hall Pass) did not seem fazed in the slightest. After Mulroney completed his symbolic walk off, The View continued as normal, and was sent into the next segment seamlessly.
Disney has ownership of both ABC and Marvel, so The View aired the entire pre-taped episode, including Mulroney’s walk off. Check out the segment below.
The View is an unscripted news show that has continued to air throughout the writers strike, without any writers. Moderator Whoopi Goldberg (Sister Act, Till) has taken the full reigns.
In regards to Mulroney’s upcoming series Secret Invasion, Mulroney plays the character President Ritson. He admitted he was not privy to the various plots of the alien invasion story but enjoyed his scenes with Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, Shaft) and Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda, Iron Man 2).
Below is an Instagram post Mulroney posted during his appearance on NBC’s Today also promoting Secret Invasion. The caption of the post states, “taken live on air on @todayshow (news show – no WGA writers).”
Mulroney also stated, in regards to his appearance on The View, that “since I have such respect for ‘The View,’ a news program with a heart, it was there that I felt comfortable enough to draw attention to the ongoing WGA strike for fair wages and working hours, as I find it incredibly important to continue to support the union.” Mulroney has been extremely noble and supportive throughout this strike and I know members of the WGA are eternally grateful for Mulroney’s solidarity.
