According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has ordered a new series from showrunner Matt Roller (The Goldbergs, Krapopolis) titled The Undervale. Dan Harmon (Harmonquest, Little Demon), the co-creator of Rick And Morty, and Steve Levy (Strange Planet, The Vindicators) are executive producing. The writer of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Chris McKenna (Spiderman: Homecoming, The Mindy Project), will also be the executive producer, along with Erica Hayes (Fairfax, Carol & The End Of The World), who will be another executive producer.
Rick and Morty has been wildly successful for Adult Swim. The series’ season five premiere received 1.7 million million views on YouTube in the first twelve hours and 1.9 on television. The series has had seven seasons, and the eighth season is expected in 2025. An anime adaptation of the series is expected to premiere on Adult Swim in 2024. Several Rick and Morty crew members have gone on to create their own animated shows, including Star Trek: Lower Decks from Mike McMahan (Axe Chop, Star Trek: Short Treks), Solar Opposites from Mike McMahan and Inside Job from Shion Takeuchi (Regular Show, Gravity Falls).
“The Undervale is wildly inventive and I’m very grateful to Matt, Chris, Dan, and their team for bringing their talents to Netflix,” said Billy Wee, director of adult animation at Netflix, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “They are phenomenal collaborators, and I can’t wait for fans all over the world to experience this hilarious show.”
As The Hollywood Reporter writes, “The series centers on a single mother of two kids who runs a haunted hotel with the help of her estranged — and deceased — brother, who thinks the ghosts have some pretty good ideas.”
“I’m thrilled to be working with Netflix and an amazingly talented cast and crew to bring to life the stories of the dead, the evil, and the struggling hospitality workers at the Undervale Hotel,” Roller said, The Hollywood Reporter reports.
Roller and Harmon previously worked together on Krapopolis, Community and Rick and Morty. Roller also worked on Agent Elvis, Archer, Speechless, The Goldbergs and Mr. Mayor.
