The Television Academy Honors Cancelled Due to Writer’s Strike

Originally set for May 31st, the 2023 Television Academy Honors reception will not take place due to the ongoing WGA strike. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the event was planned to honor shows such as As We See It, The U.S. and the Holocaust, 37 Words, The Rebellious Life of Rosa Parks, We’re Here, and Mo; however, things have changed due to the ceremony’s sudden cancellation.

The Discovery+ series Profiled: The Black Man was supposed to also receive special acknowledgment during the event. The 2023 Television Academy Honors  was supposed to be a time to congratulate and recognize the year’s worth of phenomenal projects and talents “who have harnessed the extraordinary power of storytelling to fuel social change.”

Members of the TV Academy were sent an email notifying the cancellation of the event, reading, “After discussions with the WGA and out of deference to those impacted by the ongoing labor dispute, the Television Academy is canceling the Television Academy Honors reception, which was scheduled for the evening of May 31. We appreciate everyone’s understanding. The Academy would like to congratulate this year’s Honors recipients and thank them on behalf of the entire industry for their groundbreaking and inspiring work.”

The Writer’s Guild of America strike has also changed other scheduled events of other television series, such as the Ted Lasso finale event. During this event, actors Jason Sudeikis (We’re the Millers) and Brendan Hunt (Horrible Bosses 2) from the show were set to participate in an additional panel amongst their other cast mates. However, this event was also canceled, much like the Television Academy Honors, as it was supposed to take place last Thursday.

As the Writer’s Guild of America strike continues to proceed with no estimated end, it is only predicted that other events will follow suit and have to either cancel or postpone for a later date.
