‘The Sweeney’ Star Dennis Waterman Dies At Age 74

British actor, Dennis Waterman, has died at age 74, according to Deadline. Waterman’s cause of death is unclear at this time.

Waterman’s family released a statement on his passing via Deadline.

“We are deeply saddened to announce that our beloved Dennis passed away very peacefully in hospital in Spain, on Sunday afternoon, with [his wife] Pam by his side. The family kindly ask that our privacy is respected at this very difficult time,” the family’s statement read.

Waterman was known for starring in shows such as The Sweeney, Minder, and New Tricks. He played Detective Sargent George Carter in The Sweeney before playing bodyguard Terry McCann in Minder. Another police drama Waterman starred in was New Tricks, in which he played Gerry Standing. His acting career dates back to 1960 with his first credited role being Ted Lewis in the movie Night Train For Inverness. 

Other TV series Waterman had recurring roles in include William, Fair Exchange, The Barnstormers, Thirty-Minute Theatre, The Sextet, Armchair Theatre, The Life And Loves Of A She-Devil, Tube Mice, On The Up, Stay Lucky, The Knock, and Moses Jones. His acting career spanned until 2020, where he played his final role as Jeremiah Caine in the Mark Lamprell (My Mother Frank)-directed romantic comedy, Never Too Late, alongside James Cromwell (Star Trek: First Contact), Shane Jacobson (The Bourne Legacy), Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook), and Roy Billing (The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader). Waterman was also a singer, who sung many of the theme songs to the shows he was in.

According to Deadline, Waterman was schooled at the Corona Theatre and began his acting career at the Children’s Film Foundation. After, he was invited to join Stratford’s Royal Shakespeare Company.

Waterman is survived by his wife and daughter. As of now, no memorial plans have been announced, per Deadline.
