The Shannara Chronicles will be returning for a second season on MTV.
MTV announced the series renewal today for its newest fantasy drama. It’s been renewal season for the networks, but the news comes weeks after the season one finale. The Shannara Chronicles premiered on MTV on January 5 and ended the 10 episode run on March 1. This means almost 2 months have passed since the season finale, leaving fans of the series to bite their nails in worry. Now fans can rest easy knowing there will be more adventures in the Four Lands.
“[The Shannara] dream team delivered a beautiful, groundbreaking show with compelling stories and character journeys which brought in new viewers,” said the network’s executive vice president and head of scripted development, Mina Lefevre. “I can’t wait to see what Season 2 brings.”
The Shannara Chronicles is MTV’s highest rated new series this year. The fantasy series reached impressive ratings for the network by grossing the highest digital-downloads for an MTV series. Part of the series’ success is also due to a strong social media campaign aimed at a younger demographic. Well, that and some of us were looking for something to hold us over until Game of Thrones came back.
The Shannara Chronicles is based on the best-selling books, The Sword of Shannara, by Terry Brooks, and the story was adapted for TV by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar.
The series follows the elven princess, Amberle (Poppy Drayton ); half human and half elf, Wil (Austin Butler); and human thief, Eretria (Ivana Baquero) as they strive to prevent demons from escaping from where they have been imprisoned in the Ellcrys (an ancient tree). The last living druid, Allanon (Manu Bennett) guides the young heroes in their quest to save the Four Lands.
While the Four Lands sounds very medieval-ish like something you might find in a book by Tolkien, what makes The Shannara Chronicles unique is the world is actually a future, post-apocalyptic Earth. In the trailer and the opening of the series, you’ll notice the familiar Seattle Space Needle looking like it’s seen better days.
