The ruling has been determined. The new trailer for The Comey Rule starring Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom) as former FBI Director James Comey and Brendan Gleeson (Harry Potter) as President Donald Trump has been released. A two part limited series event, the political thriller will air on Showtime September 26 and 27 via Entertainment Weekly.
2016 is remembered for many reasons. One of those reasons has to do with Comey, the now former FBI Director. As the presidential election between Hillary Clinton and Trump neared the end, Comey and the FBI looked into Clinton’s emails. The media had a field day and controversy swelled as Americans suspicions of Clinton’s emails reignited. The FBI also investigated Russia’s involvement in the election.
From there, Trump won the presidency. Comey worked for him, was fired, and then wrote a national bestseller, A Higher Loyalty. The Comey Rule is based on that very memoir, exposing the events during the 2016 election along with Comey’s relationship with the President of the United States. Through the trailer Trump is illustrated as a dangerous shadow whispering words like “loyalty” into Comey’s ear, inviting him to secluded one on one dinners. What went on in those conversations, and what did Comey and Trump’s relationship look like? This tell-all political thriller plans to reveal that.
There has been controversy regarding the upcoming limited series, including a debate over when it should air. Showtime’s original release date for the show was scheduled to be sometime in November after the 2020 presidential elections. Creator and director of the show, Billy Ray (Captain Phillips), outwardly protested the air date expressing his disappointment in wanting Americans to see this supposedly uncompromising portrayal before the 2020 elections.
Comey himself was upset by the original release date and spoke out as well via The New York Times: “I don’t understand why CBS would sit on a movie about important current events, and I hope the American people get the chance to see it soon.” The release date was ultimately moved up to September 26 and 27.
Get your popcorn ready, because The Comey Rule is coming soon to a television set near you. In the meantime here is the trailer:
