Fox’s Our Kind of People has landed a new cast member. According to Deadline, Morris Chestnut (The Best Man Holiday, Rosewood) will star opposite Yaya DaCosta’s (The Butler, Whitney) Angela Vaughn. The series is being produced by 20th Television and Fox Entertainment.
According to Deadline, Chestnut has been cast as Raymond Dupont, the husband to socialite Leah Dupont. Described as possessing an “Obama swag and presence,” he leads a massive food company with his business partner, Jack. Unfortunately most of his time as of late is spent repairing the company after Jack’s gross mishandling of finances. A good husband and dutiful father, Raymond and his daughter have a wonderful relationship as she can do no wrong in his eyes. However, he and his son butt head over the latter’s dreams of being a professional basketball player.
The series is written by Karen Gist (Jump In, Camp Rock) who executive produces along with Lee Daniels (Empire, The Spook Who Sat By the Door), according to Deadline. Lawrence Otis Graham’s (Member of the Club: Reflections on Life in a Racially Polarized World, The Teenager’s Ask and Answer Book) Our Kind of People: Inside America’s Upper Black Class inspired the series that stars DaCosta as Angela, a hard-working single mother whose life is changed forever when she inherits some property after her mother passes. Located in the small enclave of black socialites in Martha’s Vineyard, Angela moves to the New England area with hopes of building a natural hair care business. Angela soon discovers this new life will come with crueler hardships. And when a dark secret from her mother’s past is revealed, it will turn Angela’s world upside down.
According to Deadline, Chestnut’s current role in the hit Fox medical drama, The Resident, will not end due to this casting. His Dr. Barrett Cain will recur on the series, which is expected to be renewed for fifth season this week. Chestnut is also simultaneously starring in the Peacock limited series based on Malcolm D. Lee’s (Girls Trip, Space Jam: A New Legacy) The Best Man film franchise. Following the success of 2013’s sequel, The Best Man Holiday, Chestnut will once again reprise his role as Lance Sullivan for The Best Man: The Final Chapters.
