A cool breeze is rolling in as the first trailer for the new AMC+ series, The North Water, has arrived. Starring Colin Farrell (The Lobster) and Jack O’Connell (Godless), the two men plunge into freezing temperatures hunting whales in the Arctic, as reported by Indiewire.
Indiewire picked up the official synopsis for the series: “Set in Hull, England, and on the ice floes of the Arctic in the late 1850s, the series follows the story of Patrick Sumner (Jack O’Connell), a disgraced ex-army surgeon who signs up as the ship’s doctor on a whaling expedition to the Arctic. But the ferocity of the elements is matched by the violence of his crew mates, particularly Henry Drax (Colin Farrell), a harpooner and distinctly brutal force of nature. As the true purpose of the expedition becomes clear, confrontation between the two men erupts, taking them on a journey far from solid ground and way beyond the safe moorings of civilization.”
It’s difficult to differentiate the monster from the man in the first trailer for The North Water. Though taking place in the Arctic, the characters might as well have been dragged out of an old Western film taking place in the wild west, with all of its cowboy-like outlaws sporting guns and revenge. Farrell is one such outlaw as Drax, seen in the trailer intoxicated from the hunt of killing whales, bathing in all the violence and gore. On the opposite side of the spectrum falls O’Connell, the tentative ship’s doctor, new to this unforgiving world where mercy is nowhere to be found. With tension building between the pair, the trailer’s end hints at an inevitable stand-off lurking in the midst of all the ice and snow.
In addition to Farrell and O’Connell, the series also co-stars Stephen Graham (Rocketman). Based on the best-selling novel written by Ian McGuire (The Abstainer), the five-part limited series will debut exclusively on AMC+ Thursday, July 15. Created by Andrew Haigh (45 Years), the series was produced by See-Saw Films and Rhombus Media and was shot on location in the grueling Arctic.
