British actor Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us, Catherine Called Birdy) will likely be in contention for the Lead Actress Emmy this year for her role as Ellie in The Last of Us. According to Deadline, the star has stated that they don’t mind being put into this category despite their gender identity.
The 21-year-old star identifies as non-binary and prefers the use of they/them pronouns. However, they recently stated that people are free to “call me how you see me,” according to Deadline.
Appearing on Spotify’s The Louis Theroux Podcast, Ramsey said of the gendered categories that it’s important “recognition for women in the industry is preserved.” When asked about ways of modernizing the category to increase inclusivity, Ramsey stated, “I don’t have the answer and I wish that there was something that was an easy way around it, but I think that it is really important that we have a female category and a male category,” via Deadline.
On the suggestion of renaming the category “best performance in a female character,” Ramsey pointed out that this creates new issues for individuals portraying non-binary characters on screen, according to Deadline.
Of their own gender journey, Ramsey stated that being called an actress is uncomfortable for them. They go on to say: “It’s been very obvious since I was young. I always called myself a tomboy, but it wasn’t that I was a boyish girl, I was always like a bit of an in-between. Leaning most of the boys side.” They add, “To be honest, I grew up more as a little boy than I did a little girl. I always felt more masculine or more on that side of the spectrum. I guess at the moment, I don’t feel like I have access to femininity,” according to Deadline.
If they were to win the category this year, they would become the youngest actor to receive the Outstanding Lead Actress Award, usurping Zendaya (Spider-Man: Homecoming, The Greatest Showman), who currently holds the record for her performance in Euphoria.
