The HBO And Max Batman Spinoff ‘The Penguin’ Gets A Release Window

Comicbook.com reports that HBO and Max’s newest show, The Penguin, has new release date window of September 2024. The chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content, Casey Bloys (Less Than Perfect), participated in a feature interview with Variety and the executive team of WarnerMedia/Discovery. Bloys was asked what type of content HBO and Max have programmed to start working on in the next year and a half.

“So after House of the Dragon, the next big tentpole series that we have coming up will be the Penguin with Colin Farrell. That is coming out of Matt Reeves’ The Batman and it’s fantastic,” Bloys shared via Comicbook.com. “Just like Peacemaker came out of James Gunn’s Suicide Squad, it’s a really good example of what you can do. That’ll be in September.”

The release date of The Penguin was still unsure throughout the past year, according to Comicbook.com. For the longest time, The Batman spinoff series was supposed to arrive in the “fall of 2024.” Furthermore, the show was affected by the Writer and Actors’ Strikes in 2023, so the timing of the release date was hard to figure out.

The Penguin series will have eight episodes and is crime drama. According to Comicbook.com, the show will focus on the character of Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot from the beginning of his life till he becomes the powerful DC Villain, The Penguin. The show will be set right after the events unfolded in The Batman. For context, the movie ended with parts of Gotham City currently destroyed underwater after the Riddler has gunned down Falcone; so now, Penguin will try to raise his power and fight with rivals Salvatore Maroni, played by Clancy Brown (Spongebob Squarepants, The Patrick Star Show, Gen V), and Sofia Falcone, Falcone’s daughter, who is played by Cristin Milioti (Palm Springs, The Simpsons, Modern Love).

According to Comicbook.com, the cast includes Michael Kelly (Man of Steel, House of Cards, Black Mirror), Rhenzy Feliz (Runaways, Encanto, Teen Wolf), Shohreh Aghdashloo (The Expanse, 24, Star Trek Beyond), Michael Zegen (Boardwalk Empire, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Walking Dead), Deirdre O’Connell (Marvel’s Daredevil, Dragonfly, What Happens in Vegas) and John Cenatiempo (Joker, Tulsa King, The Irishman). Kelly will portray Johnny Vitti, the Falcone family underboss, and Zegen will portray Alberto Falcone, Carmine’s son.

The Penguin will be streamed on Max and HBO in September.
