Ah-mah-zing! On Saturday, the cast of the beloved and gone-too-soon ABC comedy Happy Endings reunited at Entertainment Weekly‘s EW PopFest to do a reading of a lost episode, entitled “Happy To Be Here,” that featured the death of a friend.
Draaaaaama.
The “lost episode” (that was written by show creator David Caspe specifically for the reunion at PopFest) opened with Penny (Casey Wilson) being thrown in mall jail and Max (Adam Pally) coming to bail her out. Fans learned that since the show ended, Max moved to Washington, D.C. and became one of the creepy killer clowns that is going around killing people. Penny also notes that it’s been 939 days “give or take zero days” since the friends have seen each other, which means that Saturday marked 939 days since the show ended in 2013.
Max informs Penny that Scotty, a friend of his, has died. Penny decides that the death of Scotty means it might be time to get the gang back together, as they haven’t been in the same place since Jane (Eliza Coupe) and Alex’s (Elisha Cuthbert) sister’s wedding, which was, you guessed it, 939 days ago.
In the last 939 days, fans learned that Brad (Damon Wayans Jr.) and Jane had a huge fight and split up, effectively breaking up the group. Brad moved to Wisconsin and started living off the grid, Jane moved to Japan to work for Toyota, Alex’s company Xela became a Fortune 500 company and Dave (Zachary Knighton) took his food truck on the road, leading to less-than-desirable results for him. Penny reveals she’s been married many times and Max reveals his weight loss is because he has aides that make it easier for him to work out when he needs to.
Ultimately, it was revealed that Alex had Scotty fake his own death as a way to bring the group back together again, but Scotty ended up actually dying. Brad and Jane also get back together.
Then, in an ultimate meta-twist, Dave wakes up on the morning of his wedding to Alex and says that he had a terrible dream – that Alex left him at the altar. He then tells Alex the events of his dream, which mirror the events of the show.
Of course, the cast poked fun at the show’s cancellation from ABC, including an exchange between Alex and Dave, where Alex said “it’s like one day we woke up and our friendship was just…canceled.” Dave ended that it was canceled “for no good reason.”
As for an actual reunion and a revival, Caspe said it’s always a possibility. “All of us love it and would totally do it. But unfortunately nobody has stepped up to do it. Now there’s more problems obviously because Elisha’s on a show (Netflix’s The Ranch) and Pally is on a show (Fox’s Making History). You never know,” Caspe said.
Happy Endings ran for three seasons on ABC before canceled after a low-rated third season, partially due to the network constantly moving the show around on the schedule. Fans of the show can watch all of the episodes on Hulu.
