CNN reports Jeff Garlin’s (Curb Your Enthusiasm, Daddy Day Care) Murray Goldberg will be killed off for the upcoming tenth season of ABC’s The Goldbergs. Garlin departed the series this past December after allegations of misconduct on set were revealed. No details on how the character succumbs were given.
Showrunners Alex Barnow (Shaft, Mr. Sunshine) and Chris Bishop (WordGirl, Breaking In) discussed the narrative choice in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
“This is going to be a family that has not reconciled the fact that their father’s gone but has sort of moved on and has dealt with a lot of that,” Barnow said via CNN. The season will pick up a while after daughter Erica and Geoff’s wedding, who are played by Hayley Orrantia (Schooled, Christmas Is Cancelled) and Sam Lerner (Truth or Dare, Monster House), respectively. The newlyweds would have just welcomed their first child.
“So we’re starting with optimism about a baby coming and looking forward to the future. It’s an opportunity for this interesting emotional basis for the way people are behaving,” Barnow explained.
The series was renewed in April with ABC signing lead actress and matriarch of the show, Wendi McLendon-Covey (Bridemaids, Reno 9-1-1) to a new contract in March. She was also elevated to executive producer on the retro 1980s family comedy. The series also stars Sean Giambrone (Solar Opposites, Kim Possible) as the series narrator and youngest Goldberg child, Adam; and, Tony Gentile (Drillbit Taylor, Nacho Libre) as the middle child, Barry. George Segal (Just Shoot Me, Look Who’s Talking) starred as Albert ‘Pops’ Solomon until his unfortunate passing in 2021 after complications from bypass surgery.
“It honestly feels like a huge reboot for us,” Bishop told Entertainment Weekly. “So we have tons of momentum rolling into this new season.”
The series is produced by Doug Robinson Productions and Happy Madison in collaboration with Sony Pictures Television. Barnow and Bishop serve as executive producers along with David Guarascio (Aliens in America, Happy Family), Doug Robinson (Rules of Engagement, For Life), McLendon-Covey, Mike Sikowitz (Welcome to the Family, The Class), and Annette Davis (Schooled, Indebted).
The Goldbergs will premiere Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 8:30 PM ET on ABC and stream the next day on Hulu.
