This past week, the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico has been hit by a series of serious earthquakes, causing power outages across the island and bringing homelssness to thousands of people. In wake of the natural disaster, the U.S.-based crew of the upcoming Disney+ show The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has decided to cancel their Puerto Rico shoot that was scheduled for this month.
According to a report from Deadline, the crew of the new Marvel show was scheduled to arrive in Puerto Rico as early as Tuesday, and would have spent about two weeks filming in the northern part of the island in Arecibo. However, that plan changed when Puerto Rico was hit with a 6.4 magnitude earthquake last Tuesday, which was followed by a 5.9 magnitude earthquake on Sunday. The Deadline report also notes that “it’s not clear whether production will continue in the Puerto Rico location going forward — most likely elsewhere.”
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the first Marvel show to be produced for the new Disney+ streaming platform, though the production company has a long list of superhero shows to be developed for the site. Though The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was originally slated to premiere sometime in late 2020, it is possible that with the earthquakes in Puerto Rico the production timeline may have been pushed back.
As for Puerto Rico, a recent report from Reuters confirmed that power has been restored to about 99 percent of homes on the island. About five thousand people had their homes destroyed in the quake and are currently staying in government shelters. Former President Barack Obama made a tweet following the earthquakes calling on Americans to support Puerto Rico’s recovery:
Our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico can use our support after this week’s earthquakes. They’ve shown their enduring spirit over the past couple years, and it’s up to us to pull together for one another once again. I hope you’ll support their recovery: https://t.co/rYhSb8uVXK
