Deadline has reported that The Diplomat will see two cast members promoted to series regulars for the upcoming third season. Allison Janney (The Help, Juno) and Bradley Whitford (Get Out, The Cabin In The Woods) will see increased screen time in the fourth season, which was ordered ahead of the upcoming premiere of season three. The pair starred together in the Aaron Sorkin (Molly’s Game, A Few Good Men) series The West Wing. The Diplomat features Keri Russel (August Rush, Felicity) and Rufus Sewell (A Knight’s Tale, Dark City) at the helm of its cast.
According to Deadline, Vice President Grave, played by Janney, was introduced in the middle of the second season. By the end of season two, Grave is stepping into the role of President. She stays on as a recurring character for the third season, joined by her husband, played by Whitford.
Via Deadline, Series creator Debrah Cahn (Vinyl, Homeland), who worked with both of the actors on The West Wing, spoke about being able to work with the duo again. “Working with Allison and Brad, watching them together again, and the off-the-charts foursome that is them with Keri and Rufus, it’s an insane bag of candy. Our expectations were high, and it blew right past them.”
Deadline has reported that season three of The Diplomat will expand on the dramatic conclusion to season two. Ambassador Kate Wyler, played by Russel, has just embroiled herself in a high-stakes plot which involves pointing fingers at the most powerful women on the planet. Additionally, the president is dead, and Kate’s husband may have been the cause of his death.
According to Deadline, Cahn executives produce the series along with Russel, Peter Noah (The West Wing, The Firm), Alex Graves (Game Of Thrones, The West Wing), and Eli Attie (The West Wing, House). Season three will premiere on Netflix on October 16th.
