The CW and Nexstar drama continues as the new owners continue canceling original CW shows. Nexstar was recently faced with deciding whether to order more seasons for the original CW series The Winchesters and Walker: Independence, according to Deadline. The new owners opted against it and left both series without back orders. Still, both series will air their first season with thirteen episodes.
According to Deadline, this decision will be applied to all the new series of The CW that remain in their first season. The network’s head Dennis Miller has told producers and actors that no final decision has been made regarding the shows and that the lack of back orders does not mean the shows are canceled.
This new announcement about the decision further underlines Nexstar’s goal of pushing toward cheaper scripted and unscripted shows. Also, as part of the cuts, what remains of the CW underwent another round of layoffs.
Both The Winchesters and Walker: Independence have done well compared to the CW rating standards and are prequels of popular CW shows Supernatural and Walker, respectively. So, under normal circumstances, full seasons for both shows would be in order.
In previous news, it was announced that CW shows The Flash, Riverdale, Nancy Drew, and Stargirl would be getting their final seasons soon, and the list of shows getting final seasons is expected to grow as the year progresses.
The Winchesters, a Supernatural prequel, stars Meg Donnelly (Zombies, Pandemica) as Mary and Drake Rodger (Mantra, Not Alone) as John. The show follows the relationship that develops between the protagonists as they hunt monsters. Their main focus is to find Mary’s father Samuel Campbell, played by Tom Welling (Smallville, Cheaper by the Dozen), and to stop the Akrida, monsters threatening to destroy everything.
Walker: Independence, the prequel of Walker, stars Katherine McNamara (Shadowhunters, Arrow) as Abby Walker. The show starts with Abby embarking on a journey west with her husband only for him to be murdered in front of her. She later arrives in the town of Independence in Texas. Now it is up to her to discover who murdered her husband and get justice.
The Winchesters and Walker: Independence are available to watch on the CW, with new episodes coming out on Tuesdays and Fridays respectively.
