The CW announced on Tuesday that its Arrow spinoff entitled Supergirl is set to release season six as its final season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The series was the second spinoff to originate from DC Comics, alongside Arrow and Flash.
Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist (Glee, Whiplash) as Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman who also escaped Krypton to find safety on Earth. Like many other superhero-related series, Supergirl consists of Kara assuming her responsibilities of protecting her city from threats while juggling a typical human lifestyle. The series was moved to The CW from CBS after its expensive and low-rated first season. In response to Supergirl‘s cancellation, Benoist showed her gratitude towards the opportunities she’s received through this role as a role model to young girls via Instagram where she stated, “To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement. Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless,” via The Hollywood Reporter.
The CW’s DC world will soon consist of The Flash with its seventh season, Legends of Tomorrow with its sixth season, Black Lightning with its fourth season, Batwoman with its second season, and Superman & Lois with its series debut. The final season of Supergirl will begin production in Vancouver later this month. It is slated to premiere in midseason 2021 with 20 episodes in order to accommodate Benoist’s return from maternity leave.
