The CW has found their Winchesters. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Meg Donnelly (Z-O-M-B-I-E-S, American Housewife) and Drake Rodger (Murder RX, Quiet in My Town)have been cast as the eventual parents of Supernatural‘s Sam and Dean, in the upcoming prequel. Jensen Ackles (My Bloody Valentine, Rust) will reprise his role as Dean, narrating the story of his parents.
Told in Dean’s perspective, The Winchesters follows the epic, untold love story of how John (Rodger) met Mary (Donnelly) and how they put everything on the line to save not only their love, but the entire world.
Mary is a 19-year-old girl who has been fighting the forces of darkness most of her life. After losing the people close to her, she considers quitting. However, her father’s disappearance and an encounter with John Winchester forces her to lead a new team. John, who’s recently returned from Vietnam, finds a new mission as he traces his father’s past, which leads him to a secret organization and in the middle of a war as a new hunter.
The characters recurred in the flagship series, with Samantha Smith (Journey to the Soviet Union, 21 Days of Dominion Prayer) and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Walking Dead, Unholy) playing Mary and John, respectively.
Robbie Thompson (Supernatural) will return to write the series and will serve as executive producer alongside Jensen and Danneel Ackles.
The CW ordered a pilot in February, along with a Walker prequel and a new standalone Batmanverse series, titled Gotham Knights. The Winchesters will be the third attempt at a Supernatural spin-off. The first being Bloodlines in 2014, followed by Wayward Sisters in 2018.
