The CW Cancels Previously Announced ‘Wonder Girl’ Series

The CW’s Wonder Girl series has been canceled, according to TVLine. The now-cancelled series was announced to be in development at the network back in November 2020.

The CW began development on Wonder Girl late last year. The series was expected to be an extension of the Arrowverse shows on the network, all of which feature various DC characters existing in the same universe. Via TVLine, the series was envisioned as an hourlong drama based on the DC character Yara Flor, a Latina woman who is the descendent of an Amazonian warrior and Brazilian river god.

Wonder Girl would have made DC television history by featuring the first Latina titular character. The envisioned series, written by Dailyn Rodriguez (writer, Ugly Betty), was set to follow Yara as she uses her newfound powers against the evil forces present in the DC universe.

Rodriguez responded to the news of the shows cancellation on Twitter. Her tweet expressed her gratitude for fan support and her disappointment that The CW was choosing not to move forward on the series.

For Arrowverse fans, Wonder Girl‘s halted development isn’t the only unfortunate news to come out of 2021. According to TVLine, development on Green Arrow and the Canaries, a spinoff of the Arrow series, was also recently announced to not be moving forward.

Despite the news of the cancellations, DC fans still have plenty to look forward to with The CW’s current superhero lineup. The Flash returns on March 2 for season seven, Supergirl is moving quickly into its last season, and Black Lighting fourth and final season is currently airing on the network. Legends of Tomorrow is expected to air its sixth season in summer 2021, Batwoman is currently airing its second season, and Stargirl’s second season is set to premiere sometime in spring 2021. The CW’s newest DC show, Superman & Lois, is set to premiere on February 23.
