On Sunday, TNT and TBS aired the 23rd Screen Actors Guild Awards. Many of the actors who attended, and some of the actors who won, took the time to address what is currently happening in the political world, while also celebrating that they can use their voices to call attention to the issues.
There were a lot of unsurprising winners, like Sarah Paulson for American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson and Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Veep, but there were also surprising winners, like Bryan Cranston for his portrayal of Lyndon B. Johnson for All The Way. The Crown had the most wins (they won two) and Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, Orange is the New Black, Veep, Shameless, American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson and All The Way each had one win.
Dolly Parton got a standing ovation from audience members when she came out to introduce Lily Tomlin, who is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for this year’s award. Parton also mention that Jane Fonda was supposed to be there but she’s sick. The three actresses starred in 9 to 5.
The SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris then took the stage to commemorate some of the actors who have died in the past year, including Patty Duke, Florence Henderson, William Christopher, Doris Roberts, Alan Thicke, Garry Marshall, Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds and Mary Tyler Moore, among others.
