‘The Boys’ Teaser Scene Showcases Standoff Between Homelander And Butcher

On June 7th, Prime Video released an exclusive teaser scene from The Boy’s upcoming 4th season. The new season is set to be released on June 13th.

The one minute and thirty-nine-second clip showcases Billy Butcher, played by Karl Urban (Dredd, Star Trek), as he attempts to convince his late wife’s son Ryan, played by Cameron Crovetti (Oracle, Big Little Lies) to leave his father Homelander, played by Anthony Starr (Banshee, Outrageous Fortune), and return with him to Grace Mallory, Billy’s ex-CIA ally played by Laila Robins (Gabriel’s Fire, Homeland). Unfortunately, Homelander arrives and convinces Ryan to leave with him.

While Ryan has sided with Homelander, this scene demonstrates some clear internal conflict for the character. As Butcher does his best to pour his heart out, silence and aversion to eye contact demonstrate his consideration of Butcher’s proposal. Yet, he still insists that Homelander is his father.

The arrival of Homelander puts the breaks on any chance Butcher had of getting through to Ryan. With just a glance at Butcher, Homelander can tell that he is dangerously ill, saying, “Look at that big black mass curdling around your brain,” likely referring to the brain cancer he has as a result of his frequent use of temp V last season. Homelander further speculates that he has six months left to live. In a further attempt to antagonize Butcher, Homer says, “It’s too bad. We’re not going to have that last dance together. I’ll miss us.”

This scene also illustrates the show’s bold refusal to shy away from taboo subjects. The scene implies that Homelander murdered a man under the false pretense that he is a pedophile. When Homelander arrives on the scene, he says “No means no, William. This isn’t Neverland Ranch.” In any case, audiences will see the full story later this June. The show’s first trailer was revealed at the start of last month, further showcasing the tension between Butcher and the people he trusted in his life. Joining the cast are Susan Heyward (Powers, Delilah) as Sister Sage, Valorie Curry (The Tick, Blair Witch) as Firecracker and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Walking Dead, Watchmen) as a yet unnamed character.
