The Batman director Matt Reeves (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Let Me In) has confirmed that talks are ongoing with HBO for possible second season of the record-breaking series The Penguin, Comicbook.com reports. In an interview with Variety on Wednesday, Reeves and actress Zoë Kravitz (Mad Max: Fury Road, Divergent) spoke with the outlet about the sequel to The Batman and The Penguin. Reeves also explained that getting another season of the series is quite complicated, and most definitely not guaranteed.
According to Comicbook.com, when the director was asked about any updates on The Batman — Part II movie, Reeves explained: “We’re finishing the script. We’re going to be shooting next year.” Kravitz asked Reeves about the possibility of more TV spinoffs in DC’s future, and he replied by saying, “Yeah, we’re talking to showrunner Lauren LeFranc (Impulse, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) about doing another season. That was a special experience. I just feel really fortunate. These characters don’t belong to me; they belong to the world. It comes down to whether you can approach them in a way that expresses something personal.”
According to Comicbook.com, this is only the first word about possible second season of The Penguin. Reeves also told The Hollywood Reporter that a second season of the series was “on the table.” However, Colin Farrell (The Lobster, S.W.A.T.), the main lead of the series, spoke to the outlet by stating that he wouldn’t want to return to Gotham again because as a method actor, that was really traumatic for him, especially wearing those difficult prosthetics. He said: “I never want to put on that f—ing suit and f—ing head again.”
Although, according to Comicbook.com, Farrell agreed to appear with his character in The Batman — Part II movie, and Reeves has agreed and signed a contract to direct a third Batman movie after that one. This sequel will seemingly see the return of Robert Pattinson (Twilight, The Devil All The Time) as Batman, Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction, The French Dispatch) as Jim Gordon, and Andy Serkis (The Simpsons, Andor) as Alfred Pennyworth.
The Batman and The Penguin are streaming now on Max.
