FX’s popular Cold War spy drama The Americans is getting an end date after a two-season final renewal, Deadline reports. The Americans is currently on its fourth season. Season 5 is expected to air in 2017. The sixth season will feature 10 episodes but won’t air until sometime in 2018.
Moreover, FX Productions, which co-produces The Americans with Fox Fox 21 TV Studios, has ended all new overall deals with co-showrunners/executive producers Joe Weisberg. Weisberg created The Americans and Joel Fields is expected to develop the network’s next show.
Eric Schrier, the president of original programming for FX said “Through its first four seasons, critics have lauded The Americans as one of the best shows on television and, remarkably, a series that keeps getting better every year.” Schrier went on to say “We have no doubt that this two-season order will allow Joe and Joel to tell this story to its perfect conclusion.”
Bert Salke also added “While we are already mourning the eventual end, we are grateful to FX for this generous two-season pickup that enables the show to go out on its own terms and gives the creators time to craft a final stretch as satisfying as the show itself.”
The Americans have been largely praised by critics as one of the best dramas on TV. But despite this, the series has been overlooked by the Emmys except for a best guest actress trophy which was won by Margo Martindale. However, the series has won Critics’ Choice, TCA, and several Peabody drama series awards.
The Americans stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys. Fields and Weisberg said “It’s hard to believe we’re heading into the final stretch on The Americans, and we’re so grateful to know we’ll be telling the story to its conclusion.” Adding “It’s a lot of people putting their hearts and souls into The Americans, at this point for a lot of years. We’re looking forward to the final two.”
Weisberg and Fields executive produce the series alongside Graham Yost, Chris Long and Stephen Schiff , along with Amblin Television heads Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank. Joshua Brand serves as consulting Producer.
