The 2017 Golden Globes Ratings Rise

Last night, NBC aired the 74th Golden Globes, which celebrated the best in television and movies from the past year, with Jimmy Fallon hosting for the telecast for the first time. This morning, TVLine reported that the telecast is eyeing a ratings uptick from the last few years.

In the metered market ratings, the awards show scored a 13.3 rating, which is up about 2 percent from the show last year, when Ricky Gervais hosted for the fourth time. That’s the best metered market result since 2014, which scored a 14.1.

Overall, the show scored a 4.8 rating in the 18 to 49 demographic and was watched by 16.73 million viewers, according to TV by the Numbers.

The final numbers, which were released Tuesday morning on TV by the Numbers, show that the telecast improved on last year’s numbers. The show scored a 5.6 rating in the 18 to 49 demographic and was watched by 20.02 million viewers. Last year’s show garnered a 5.5 rating in the 18 to 49 demographic.

The show definitely had high points during the show, such as Fallon’s La La Land-inspired opening number. He kept the opening number under wraps, but told people it was an opening number that wasn’t to be missed. His opening number was a star-studded affair, with many of the nominees from both movies and television appearing at some point in the opening. Tina Fey, Fallon’s former Saturday Night Live co-star and co-host of the 2014 and 2015 Golden Globes, also appeared, spoofing Emma Stone’s character from the movie.

Kristen Wiig and Steve Carell also had a comedic moment while introducing Best Animated Feature, where they talked about the first animated feature they saw before talking about how traumatic the movies they watched were scarring for them.

But one of the most memorable and most-talked about moments of the awards was Viola Davis’ introduction speech for Meryl Streep, who was awarded the Cecil B. DeMille Award. Streep’s speech was also praised and was well-received by the stars and viewers alike.

The Golden Globes kicked off award season, as the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Grammys and the Academy Awards all air in January and February.
