The second season of the dark, dramedy Netflix hit series Wednesday has secured yet another star: Thandiwe Newton (Crash). Sources informed Variety that Newton is set to star in the second season. However, precise details surrounding her role have yet to be revealed. As previously reported, Steve Buscemi (Fargo) is also set to join the cast for season two.
Variety notes that Netflix representatives turned down the opportunity to comment on this news.
Independent Talent Group and WME represent Newton.
Variety notes that while minor details about the new season of Wednesday have been unearthed, one thing remains the same: Jenna Ortega (Scream) is set to reprise her role as Wednesday.
The series’ first season concluded with Wednesday victoriously solving a string of brutal murders while simultaneously plotting to demolish Nevermore Academy along with its students.
Wednesday initially premiered in November of 2022 and immediately became a huge hit for the streamer. According to Variety, the series has become one of Netflix’s most-watched shows and has the Emmys to prove it; Wednesday has won four Emmy awards and has received 12 nominations.
The development of season two was put on hold due to last year’s strikes. However, production is anticipated to ramp up again in Ireland in late April.
Miles Millar (Smallville) and Alfred Gough (I Am Number Four), who created Wednesday, are also executive producers and co-showrunners on the series. Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands) directed the first four episodes of Wednesday and is also an additional executive producer.
Other executive producers include Andrew Mittman (Elvis) from 1.21 Entertainment, Steve Stark (The Handmaid’s Tale) from Toluca Pictures, Kevin Lafferty (The Umbrella Academy), Kayla Alpert (LAX), Gail Berman (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Kevin Miserocchi (The Addams Family) from the Tee and Charles Addams Foundation, Tommy Harper (Star Trek Beyond) and Jonathan Glickman (Rush Hour) from Glickmania.
MGM Television is the studio that produces Wednesday.
