Apple announced today that the second season of Ted Lasso will premiere on July 23, according to The Verge. A newly released trailer for the upcoming season teases the return of the show’s happy-go-lucky Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis, Horrible Bosses) as he coaches the English soccer team, AFC Richmond.
The 12-episode season will follow Lasso as he “leads AFC Richmond during season of turmoil, with the club recently relegated to a lower league,” according to The Verge. Series co-creator Bill Lawrence (Scrubs) confirmed earlier this year that the show would not incorporate any storylines involving the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Verge reports that season two will bring back most of the cast and characters from the first season, which featured Jeremy Swift (The Smoking Room), Hannah Waddingham (Game of Thrones), Brett Goldstein (Soulmates), Brendan Hunt (We’re The Millers), Nick Mohammed (Christopher Robin), Phil Dunster (Humans) and Juno Temple (Vinyl). I May Destroy You actress Sarah Niles is set to join the season two cast as a sports psychologist for the team.
The half-hour comedy has garnered acclaim from critics and fans alike since its release last August. Sudeikis took home Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Critics’ Choice Awards for his performance.
Apple has previously announced in October that the show would be picked up for third season.
