Ted Lasso had a monumental season four premiere after three-year break. According to Deadline, on its Aug. 4 and 5 release dates, the show performed exceptionally well and broke impressive milestones.
Ted Lasso was created by Jason Sudeikis (We’re the Millers, Horrible Bosses), who also played Ted Lasso, and Brendan Hunt (Terrestrial, We’re the Millers), who also played Coach Beard.
Season 4 brings new direction to AFC Richmond with the arrival of its women’s team. Ted takes on the challenge of coaching the new squad, facing obstacles that push both him and the players to step outside their comfort zones. Along the way, they learn to embrace uncertainty and take chances they never imagined they would.
Deadline reported viewing data for season four from Nielsen, which Apple provided on the 6th. Ted Lasso gained 296.6 million viewing minutes and earned the title of the most-streamed program in the U.S. for its Aug. 5 release. The show quickly became Apple TV’s biggest launch ever. Although it had not made Nielsen’s streaming Top 10 for the week, Deadline predicts that it could do so in upcoming weeks.
Ted Lasso’s season four premiere was not unlikely to perform strongly. This follows a trend seen throughout the show’s run. Its third season, which premiered in 2023, propelled it to become the most-watched streaming original of the year. Across the 24-episode season, the series drew 16.9 billion minutes. This is especially impressive, considering Apple TV has far fewer subscribers than many top streamers.
Season three was thought to be the series’ end for audiences after AFC Richmond won their championship, so season four’s announcement came as a surprise. The season’s highly successful premiere strongly suggests that audiences are still interested in Ted Lasso and his endeavors.
Season four features returning cast members Hannah Waddingham (Ride or Die, Game of Thrones), Juno Temple (Killer Joe, Swapped), Brendan Hunt (We’re the Millers, Elio) and Jeremy Swift (Grow, Oliver Twist). It also includes many new faces, including Tanya Reynolds (Sex Education, The Decameron), Jude Mack (Such Brave Girls, Waiting for the Out), Faye Marsay (Ten Pound Poems, Andor), Rex Hayes (The Pact, Bang), Aisling Sharkey (Jurassic World: Dominion, Heirs of the Night), Abbie Hern (The Pact, My Lady Jane) and Grant Feely (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Five Nights at Freddy’s).
