According to Deadline, Phil Dunster (Murder on the Orient Express, Pragma), known for his work in Ted Lasso, will be working with Steve Carell (The Office, Despicable Me) in an upcoming untitled comedy series. The series is created by Matt Tarses (Scrubs, Sports Night), Bill Lawrence (Bad Monkey, Shrinking), and Warner Bros. Television. Information on Dunster’s role as a recurring character has not yet been released to the public.
The show received a 10-episode-straight-to-series order from HBO in May, per Deadline. The order will reunite Lawrence and Dunster, as both worked on Ted Lasso on Apple TV+ and Lawrence developed the series.
Dunster played Jamie Tartt in Ted Lasso, which lasted three seasons. He was awarded an Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series Emmy nomination in 2023 for his performance in the show. After his role as Jamie, he will appear on Surface, an Apple TV psychological thriller, for its second season in 2025. He is represented by Brillstein Entertainment Partners, Jackoway Austen Tyerman and CAA.
Dunster has also created, produced and acted in his own short film titled Idiomatic with Kerry Godliman (Derek, After Life). Via Deadline, the short film was very successful and it was awarded Best Comic Distortions in the SCAD Savannah Film Festival Shorts Spotlight and appearing in the 2024 TriBeCa Film Festival. In addition to being an actor and producer, he is hosting An Evening With Phil Dunster, a fundraiser for Young Lives vs Cancer.
Deadline states that the comedy will take place on a college campus and focuses on the author, played by Carell, and the complicated relationship with his daughter. The debut episode was written by Tarses and Lawrence, who also executive produce. Other executive producers are Carell, Liza Katzer (Head of the Class, Whiskey Cavalier) and Jeff Ingold (Clone High, Life Sentence) of Doozer Productions. The show is produced by Doozer and is associated with Warner Bros. Television.
