According to a press release from the Television Academy, Ted Danson (Cheers, The Good Place) and Mary Steenbergen (Step Brothers, The Proposal) are set to receive the 2025 Bob Hope Humanitarian award. Both actors have a long history of philanthropic work, and this will be the first time the award is given to a couple.
“Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen have long used their voices — and their hearts — to champion causes that uplift the planet and its people,” said chair of the Television Academy Cris Abrego. “From environmental advocacy to humanitarian relief, they lead with grace, integrity and purpose. The Television Academy is proud to honor their extraordinary legacy of service with the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award.”
As the press release reports, Danson has been a consistent philanthropist with a focus on ocean conservation. He was a co founder of the American Oceans Campaign (AOC), which was created in 1987. Merging with Oceana in 2001, the organization’s goal was to spread awareness about damaging human effects on the Oceans like Oil spills, sewage pollution, and offshore developments. He’s also worked with Young Storytellers, Elton John AIDS Foundation, ASPCA, and Climate U.S. PAC.
Steenbergen, on the other hand, has worked tirelessly to ensure the well being of children across the world. She’s done work with Artists for a Free South Africa, Heifer International, Oceana, and No Kid Hungry. Steenbergen also spoke at the Ohio School Board Association Capitol Conference in 2024 about the value of public school arts classes.
The two actors collaborated together to co-found the organization Angels at Risk, which supports children and teenagers who are at risk of alcohol abuse and drug abuse through early prevention education and encouraging parent-teen communication
