According to The Hollywood Reporter, SAG-AFTRA is trying to attach compensation for the reuse of AI scans. The use of AI has been a very large point for SAG-AFTRA, including after the studios’ most recent contract offer on Monday. The news comes from multiple sources who are familiar with the negotiations.
The Hollywood Reporter stated that the sources revealed that SAG-AFTRA pushed back on the AI clause in the most recent offer. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers wants to secure AI scans for Schedule F performers, which are “guild members who earn more than the minimum for series regulars ($32,000 per TV episode) and feature films ($60,000).” This prospect would require studios and streamers to pay to scan likeliness of Schedule F performers.
However, SAG-AFTRA is primarily attempting to attach compensation for the reuse of AI scans at the moment so that AMPTP companies would also need the consent of the actors and performers. A union-side source says that the offer from AMPTP would allow them to use scans of deceased performers without the consent of their estate, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
A studio-side source stated that the counter proposal would require producers to get rights from the deceased actors “authorized representative” who owns that actors exclusive rights, says The Hollywood Reporter. Along with this, that person will need to give permission along with receiving a form of compensation from any reuse of a scan of that performer.
The Hollywood Reporter also revealed that over the weekend, SAG-AFTRA worked on a counter proposal which was given to AMPTP. SAG-AFTRA’s chief negotiator, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, along with AMPTP’s chief negotiator, Carol Lombardini, had a meeting scheduled for Monday. When asked about the meeting, SAG-AFTRA stated; “Please know every member of our TV/Theatrical Negotiating Committee is determined to secure the right deal and thereby bring this strike to an end responsibly, there are several essential items on which we still do not have an agreement, including AI. We will keep you informed as events unfold.”
