With Ellen Page previously being cast in Netflix‘s revival of Tales of the City, Girls star Zosia Mamet is the latest to hop aboard the first ordered 10-episodes from the network.
The actress is set to play the recurring role of Claire Duncan, an ambitious documentarian who has a newly developing relationship with Ellen Page’s Shawna. Both try to understand their intense attraction to each other despite each other’s ambivalence.
The new cast also includes original cast mates: Laura Linney (Mary Ann), Olympia Dukakis (Anna), Barbara Garrick (DeDe). As well as newbies, Murray Bartlett and Charlie Barnett from Looking and Chicago Fire, respectively.
This will be the fourth iteration of the show since the previous 90’s versions, More Tales of the City and Further Tales of the City, and it’s original 1993 mini-series of the same name. Netflix’s interpretation of Armistead Maupin’s new series, continues to stick to it’s core LGBTQ-themes and is set in the heart of San Francisco.
Previously, Maupin’s Tales of the City were a series of novels, that were initially published as a newspaper serial during the 1970’s, before being serialized and published into a series of books by HarperCollins. Later the first three books subsequently, were adapted into the infamous three television miniseries starring Olympia Dukakis and Laura Linney. The first airing was on PBS, before appearing on Showtime.
The new series follows Laura Linney’s character, Mary Ann through a midlife crisis as she returns home to her daughter (Page) and ex-husband Brian (Paul Gross) in San Francisco, 20 years after leaving them behind to pursue her career. Maupin has also mentioned the series will be set in present-day San Francisco and feature a few complications for the residents of 28 Barbary Lane as the find love and new adventures together.
