‘Sweet Tooth’: Netflix Releases First Trailer and Premiere Date for Fantasy Series

Netflix has released the first trailer for the upcoming fantasy series Sweet Tooth. Based on the DC comics by Jeff Lemire (The Nobody), the first season will premiere on Friday, June 4, according to Entertainment Weekly

First published in 2009, the comic book series Sweet Tooth takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where ten years earlier a deadly virus caused mayhem within society and led to the creation of hybrid babies, who are part-human and part-animal. Enter Gus, a nine-year-old boy living in Nebraska who is part-deer and part-human. Nicknamed sweet tooth, he lives in hiding due to hunters that make a sport out of killing hybrids. His life in seclusion then changes when he meets Jepperd, an outsider of society. Together they decide to leave Nebraska to go on a journey across America to discover themselves and their origins.

The series stars Christian Convery (Beautiful Boy) as the protagonist Gus and Nonso Anozie (Game of Thrones) as Jepperd. The cast also features Will Forte (Nebraska), Adeel Akhtar (Utopia), Stefania LaVie Owen (The Carrie Diaries), Aliza Vellani (Riverdale), Dania Ramirez (Devious Maids), and James Brolin (Traffic) as the series narrator.

Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Susan Downey (Perry Mason), Amanda Burrell (Perry Mason), and Linda Moran (Honey Boy) co-executive produce alongside the series showrunners Jim Mickle (Hap and Leanord) and Beth Schwartz (Arrow). Mickle also directs.

Entertainment Weekly picked up at statement released by Mickle on his vision for the series: “We wanted to make a show that offers escape and adventure, where nature is reclaiming the world and in many ways it feels like a fairy tale. Sweet Tooth is a new kind of dystopian story, it’s very lush and hopeful. We want people to come into this world where there’s beauty and hope and adventure. This is a sweeping story — we ride on trains, climb mountaintops, run through forests. This is a show about what makes a family, what home really means, and why it’s important to keep faith in humanity.”

Season one of Sweet Tooth will premiere on Netflix June 4 with a total of eight episodes. Watch the first trailer for the series below:
