Susan Sarandon Joins ‘Ray Donovan’ Season 5

Hot off of her new FX limited series Feud with Jessica Lange, Susan Sarandon is joining the cast of Showtime’s Ray Donovan for season 5 of the series, according to Deadline. The new season is set to premiere this summer.

Sarandon’s character will be Samantha Winslow, the ambitious head of a film studio. This is Sarandon’s second time in a Showtime series, after guest-starring in their series The Big C in 2012. In Ray Donovan, she will join Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight, who have both been nominated for multiple Golden Globes for their roles of Ray Donovan and Mickey Donovan (playing son and father) in the series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Season 5 of Ray Donovan promises additional news faces including Rhys Coiro (Entourage), Michael Gill (House of Cards), Adina Porter (American Horror Story) and Brian White (Scandal).  Schreiber will certainly not disappoint fans continuing his role of Ray Donovan, the LA-based attorney who serves as a ‘fixer’ for all the scandals and crimes that celebrities and high-power executives find themselves in, and Sarandon’s presence will only add more interest to the season.

Little is known about the plot of season 5, but in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter back in September, Ray Donovan showrunner David Hollander commented on the importance of guest stars going into season 5:

We’re really dependent on story being generated by guest stars. There is no big bad guy that Ray has to fight year in and year out, and there is no procedural element of whodunit. So we use new characters to bring in what we feel like the zeitgeist is. I highly doubt we would do a year without bringing some sort of guest star in.

As far as Sarandon’s future following the season, the 70 year-old Oscar-winning actress is showing no signs of slowing down. In the next year, Sarandon is set to appear in Going Places which is a spin-off film of The Big Lebowski, as well as star in The Death and Life of John F Donovan alongside Natalie Portman and Jessica Chastain. She has previously won an Oscar for Best Actress for Dead Man Walking, as well as four other Oscar nominations, and also has been nominated for eight Golden Globes and five SAG awards.
