After much speculation as to the fate of CBS’s Supergirl it looks like the show will be flying to you this Fall from The CW network.
Fans of the show have been waiting to hear news about whether Supergirl would be renewed by CBS or if it was to be cancelled and cast aside.
Viewers of the show on CBS were up to roughly 10.03 million overall in Nielsen’s estimates. With an average viewer age of 56 years old, there was a lot of talk about the potential misplacement of the show on the wrong network. This is nothing new as there has been discussion on the mis-networked series since it was first premiered.
Before Supergirl was greenlit and signed to CBS’s schedule there was initial talk of the show being added to the already superhero heavy CW.
Back in February, MXDWN reported that Supergirl and The Flash would be crossing storylines and networks. In March, CBS’s Supergirl crossed over with The CW’s The Flash and ratings went through the roof. This brought about more speculation as to the whereabouts of Supergirl’s future after the season one finale was to occur. Would the show do better on The CW? Ratings from that night suggest there is a good possibility that Kara Danvers would do well on the secret, but not so secret, superhero network.
Despite the ratings and interest shown in having the heroine join the lineup, The CW denied any rumors of a possible deal to obtain the rights to Supergirl.
But surprise! It was confirmed Thursday by Variety that Supergirl actually was moving to The CW network. This is the first time a show still on the air has actually changed networks. Although projects have changed networks behind the scenes, it is usually before a show premieres. This happened in 2011, when CBS was in the pilot phase of development for Sarah Michelle Geller’s Ringer. Before being greenlit however Ringer was passed to The CW where it lasted one season.
Here’s hoping that the newest members of The CW family stick around a bit longer and that there are more superhero crossovers in the future.
