On Thursday Studio Ghibli posted an exciting tweet. According to Deadline, they hinted at a collaboration with the American studio Lucasfilm.
According to Deadline, both studios have not given any more details as to what the project is or who will be involved. The tweet only consisted of the Japanese animation studio’s logo which was later accompanied by the logo of the famous Disney subsidiary. The exciting announcement was given an extra weight when Disney’s president of marketing Asad Ayaz retweeted the original tweet.
A recent Instagram post on the official Star Wars account revealed that the collaboration is a short about the fan-favorite character Grogu or Baby Yoda as he is most commonly known. The short is titled Grogu and Dust Bunnies and comes out on November 12. Grogu is a main character of the renowned Star Wars series The Mandalorian which also stars Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones, Wonder Woman 1984) as Din Djarin. Studio Ghibli was founded in 1985 by filmmakers Hayao Miyazaki (Ponyo, The Wind Rises), Isao Takahata (Pom Poko, My Neighbors the Yamadas), and Toshio Suzuki (The Red Turtle, When Marnie Was There). The Oscar-winning studio is behind the popular movies My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Howl’s Moving Castle, among others. The studio released on 2020 a new fantasy film, Earwig and the Witch, based on the novel by Diana Wynne Jones (Archer’s Goon, The Crown of Dalemark), which was directed by Gorō Miyazaki (Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter, From Up on Poppy Hill).
Lucasfilm is the production company founded by George Lucas (Star Wars) in 1971 to produce the Star Wars movies and, later, to produce the Indiana Jones franchise. The company’s animation branch is known for the TV shows Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels, shows that have become popular among the fans of the movies. Recent releases from the studio include TV shows Andor, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. The studio hasn’t released any films since the premiere of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. In 2021, the studio partnered with seven anime studios on its anthology series Star Wars: Visions. The show utilized different anime animation techniques to tell stories related to the Star Wars universe.
The American studio will soon be releasing Willow, a series based on the classic 1988 film of the same name. Other upcoming projects include the fifth Indiana Jones film directed by James Mangold (Logan, Ford v Ferrari) which is set to premiere in the summer of 2023.
