The new, mysterious trailer begins with a ticking of a clock. It then shows several children, all in hospital gowns with shaved heads, perform activities in what can only be described as a rainbow room. They build blocks, race cars, and play chess. Their appearance calls back to what Eleven, portrayed by Millie Bobby Brown (Godzilla vs. Kong), looked like in the first season when she first escaped activity.
Then, the silhouette of Dr. Brenner appears as he begins to walk down the dark familiar hallway inside Hawkins National Laboratory, which holds the room where eleven was kept hostage as he performed experiments on her. With his well tailored suit and tall head of hair, Dr. Brenner is instantly recognizable. As he reaches the end of the hall, he enters the double doors that lead into the room where the children play their games, and he greets them saying, “Good morning children,” to which they respond, “Good morning Papa.”
But it doesn’t stop there. As he enters that room and shuts the door, we stay in the hallway as shallow, gasping breathes begin to be heard. Traveling back down the hall, the camera ends on a door labeled “eleven.” The screen abruptly cuts to black, and then Dr. Brenner asks, “Eleven, are you listening?” A brief glimpse of Eleven’s panicked eyes appear, and then the trailer ends.
There are many theories now circling as this new teaser trailer creates several questions about Dr. Brenner’s death and Eleven’s whereabouts. Viewers will remember Dr. Brenner’s gruesome demise in the season one finale, as the demogorgon attacks him in the hallway at Hawkins Middle School. Many characters within the show believed him to have died, but one said he was still alive. Now some are wondering if Dr. Brenner never really died, and this trailer is hinting at his triumphant resurrection. Others have hypothesized it’s a flashback from when Eleven was kept in captivity all the way back in season one.
The only concrete answers lay ahead as season four slowly but surely approaches. The upcoming season is currently still in production with no release date announced as of yet.
