Steven Yeun (Minari) is returning to television in an as of yet untitled ten-part limited series starring opposite Ali Wong (Always Be My Maybe). With no network attached as of yet, Amazon, FX, Netflix, and a handful of others will battle it out for the highly coveted series, as reported by Deadline.
This news comes after Yeun made history on Monday morning by becoming the first Asian-American to be nominated for Best Actor at the Academy Awards. He was nominated for his starring role in the 2020 critically acclaimed film Minari, directed by Lee Issac Chung (I Have Seen My Last Born). A tale of Korean immigrants running farm in Arkansas during the 1980s, Yeun portrayed Jacob Yi, the patriarch of the family. Minari scored an additional five nominations, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Score, and Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Chung. The Oscars ceremony will air on April 25 on ABC.
The half-hour dramedy series is an A24 production, which also made Minari. Both Yeun and Wong will also be executive producing. Deadline also learned that Lee Sung Jin (Tuca & Bertie) will be the series creator, showrunner, and writer of the limited series. As of now, they are keeping the basic synopsis of the show under wraps.
Yeun’s upcoming return to television marks his first starring role in a series since AMC’s The Walking Dead. His breakout role, he portrayed Glenn Rhee from 2010-2016 before leaving the show. He then went on to be featured in various films, including Bong Joon Ho’s (Parasite) Okja, Sorry to Bother You, and Burning.
Wong, a stand-up comedian and actress, is known for her leading role in the 2019 Netflix romantic comedy film Always Be My Maybe. She’s also currently starring in the ABC series American Housewife and had a recurring role in the Hulu original series Love, Victor. Her stand-up comedy special Ali Wong: Hard Knock Wife is available on Netflix.
