As a lifelong New Yorker, Steve Buscemi (Fargo) is no stranger to the city’s ever-present pigeon population. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Buscemi’s familiarity with them made it a natural fit for him to voice Bobby, a quick-witted and opinionated pigeon in DirecTV’s ongoing For the Birds ad campaign. Bobby is paired with Frank, a laid-back and optimistic pigeon counterpart voiced by Henry Winkler (Arrested Development).
Buscemi described Bobby as having a classic New York persona, combining toughness with a stubborn streak. While pigeons often don’t get the best reputation from city residents, Bobby stands out as a character full of charm and depth. According to The Hollywood Reporter, The latest chapter of the campaign introduces Tammy the Squirrel, voiced by comedian Kristen Schaal (Gravity Falls). Tammy helps Bobby and Frank explore the benefits of DirecTV’s streaming service, highlighting how easy it is to enjoy content without the need for satellite. The campaign showcases DirecTV’s smooth integration of live TV, streaming and on-demand options, catering to a variety of viewing preferences.
In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Buscemi discussed the introduction of Kristen Schaal’s character to the third commercial installment. Buscemi noted, “It was fun because a new character was introduced by way of a squirrel who sort of inserts herself into our conversation and she has a lot to say. She doesn’t exactly render us speechless but we’re sort of taken aback. The squirrel is a really fun character, played by Kristen Schaal who I worked with many years ago on a Tom DiCillo film…I thought she was a perfect addition to that cast and I hope there’s more to come with her.”
When asked by The Hollywood Reporter about his opinions regarding voiceover work, Buscemi replied, “Well, it’s been really fun. If it’s something that looks fun to do or the team behind it is interesting. The most recent one I did was the Transformers One film, and that had an amazing cast. The work with Pixar on Monsters Inc. was really because I loved their work. What actor wouldn’t want to be a villain in a Pixar film?”
