The Bone Church was written as a poem by Stephen King back in 1960. He later revised it as an inclusion in The Bazaar of Bad Dream anthology book in 2015. Now, Chris Long and David Ayer’s Cedar Park Entertainment will develop it into a series.
King has a few other projects in his lineup over the next year or so. Coming off the high of IT, director Andy Musichetti has agreed to lend his talents to the sequel. Hulu has been promoting the Castle Rock series which you can read about on mxdwn. And finally, King gets to return to The Overlook Hotel (The Shining) as its sequel, Doctor Sleep, is greenlighted as a movie directed by Mike Flanagan.
This poetic story surrounds a group of explorers who travel to a remote jungle looking to locate The Bone Church, a legendary burial ground for ghost elephants. On their travels, members lose their lives in a variety of gross manners with only three survivors. One of the three is the narrator for this tale as it’s being told from a bar stool.
King and Long collaborated previously on the Mr. Mercedes series which aired in 2017 on the Audience Network. Ayer was part of the creative team on Suicide Squad, Netflix’s Bright and the upcoming Bright 2. Long also has an extensive list of executive producer credits including You Me Her, Kingdom, Loudermilk, and the forthcoming Give Us This Day.
