The Starz half-hour dramedy, Vida, has officially been renewed for a third season, just shortly after its Season 2 premiere last week. Tanya Saracho serves as creator and showrunner for the series, which is currently airing Sundays at 9 and 9:30 pm.
Initially inspired by the short story Pour Vida by Richard Villegas Jr., the critically acclaimed series originally premiered on May 6, 2018, on Starz and was created by Saracho. Along with leads Melissa Barrera and Mishel Prada, actors Ser Anzoategui, Chelsea Rendon, Carlos Miranda, Maria-Elena Laas, and Roberta Colindrez round out the supporting cast.
“My heart is so incredibly full with this news of season 3,” Prada told EW in an exclusive statement. “The support for Vida has left me without words. I can’t thank our fans enough for using their voices and becoming part of our familia, because of you we are able to bring this story to life for one more season. Starz is sending a message that these stories are valid, important, and worthy.”
The series stars Barrera and Prada as two Mexican-American sisters Lyn and Emma, who move back to their childhood home after the death of their estranged mother. Despite being complete opposites of each other, Vida follows the ups and down of sisterhood, as the free spirited Lynn and uptight Emma learn about their mom’s life through the inheritance of their family-owned bar.
“I’m just so excited we get to continue telling OUR story,” Rendon added. “It means so much that Starz believes in us and the stories we are telling. I hope our success shows other networks and studios that brown people don’t have to be stereotyped to be successful!”
Season 2 of the series focuses on “Lyn and Emma contemplating the relationships in their lives, including their own, and are forced to dig deep to unearth what their mother’s legacy means to them,” via the show’s logline.
“It is a rarity in television today to have a series earn this level of critical praise for two consecutive seasons and spark cultural conversation in the way that Vida has,” Starz COO Jeffrey Hirsch said in a statement. “We are proud to continue to tell this story with Tanya and the incredible cast and crew she has assembled.”
