According to The Hollywood Reporter, newly independent network Starz has greenlit Fightland, a gritty drama set in the underworld of British boxing. The show marks Starz’s first series order since officially parting ways with Lionsgate in May.
THR lists that production on the action-packed series is set to begin this fall in London. Fightland will follow a disgraced boxing champion who returns from prison to seek revenge on a powerful crime family he believes betrayed him. The project has been in development at Starz since 2022 and recently opened its writers’ room just weeks before the series announcement.
Executive producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson (Power, BMF) is bringing Fightland to life through his G-Unit Film & Television banner. “Fightland marks my first internationally produced show through my G-Unit Film & Television,” Jackson said in a statement via The Hollywood Reporter.
“I am excited to bring that global energy to the screen,” he added via THR. “I anticipate this to be more successful than anything I’ve done before — boxing’s raw stakes are gonna take it to another level.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, showrunners Damione Macedon (BMF, Low Winter Sun) and Raphael Jackson Jr. (Power, Genius: MLK/X) will serve as writers and executive producers. Joining them as co-writers and EPs are Daniel Fajemisin-Duncan (Run, New Blood) and Marlon Smith (Save Me, Rainbow Six). The team is rounded out by Expanded Media’s Francis Hopkinson (Bancroft, Wallander) and Kate Leadbetter (Devil’s Peak, The Sense of an Ending), also on board as executive producers. The series will be produced collaboratively by G-Unit Film & Television and Expanded Media.
“Set against the backdrop of the British boxing underground, this series promises to be the perfect combination of character and adrenaline,” said Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming for Starz via THR. “Fightland is the kind of unapologetically visceral, premium storytelling that Starz is known for, and we believe that each dramatic round of this compelling drama will leave fans wanting more.”
Now operating without a parent studio, Starz aims to focus on intellectual property it can fully own and control. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the company will continue developing projects that spotlight women and underrepresented creators.
