According to a report by Making Star Wars, Disney Plus’s new Star Wars spinoff show, Andor, is rumored to have cast Andy Serkis (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Lord of the Rings franchise).
Serkis’s casting has led many fans to theorize that this may mean the return of the villain Snoke from the sequel trilogy. Serkis played Snoke in The Force Awakens (2015) and in The Last Jedi (2017).
Snoke first appeared in The Force Awakens as the grand main villain of the reboot trilogy, only for him to be surprisingly killed by the end of the second movie in the trilogy: The Last Jedi. This death caused a public outcry on Twitter as fans condemned the writers for wasting an excellent villain and opportunity.
Serkis himself was even thrown back by his character’s surprise demise, and went on to criticize the story along with the fans.
“I was devastated when I read that script because it was all going so well,” Serkis told Gizmodo. “I was like, ‘Man, this is a boss character. I’m going to love playing… what!? You’re kidding me, what?'”
Andor takes place before the events of the sequel trilogy, more accurately before the events of Star Wars: Rogue One, as it follows the adventures of that movie’s main character, freedom fighter Cassian Andor, played by Diego Luna (The Terminal, A Rainy Day in New York).
While Serkis is a talented actor and could play various characters for the show, Luna has told Deadline that Star Wars fans should expect to see some recognizable characters in the series.
“You’ll definitely see familiar faces,” Luna told Deadline. “I can tell you about this project like no other because I can’t spoil the ending if you’ve seen [Rogue One] already. No matter what I say, I can’t ruin the ending.”
The 12 episode series will premiere on Disney Plus in 2022.
