‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 2 trailer released by CBS All Access

After the release of the new Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 trailer by CBS All Access, trekkies are in a tizzy. Ethan Peck, who plays Spock, is prominently featured, which seems to point at a Vulcan-focused storyline.

Star Trek: Discovery details the events that occurred about a decade before the original series and bears no relation to the recent movies that follow a similar vein. Like the original series, the show follows the  USS Discovery while exploring the history behind the Federation–Klingon war. After Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts were fired during Season one of the series, Alex Kurtzman took the reins as sole show-runner.

According to Alex Kurtzman, creator and executive producer of the show, the season will differ in several ways. First, it will have a largely cinematic feel while still retaining the intimate relationships between characters. Anson Mount, who plays Christopher Pike, the Starfleet captain before Kirk, revealed that fans will finally learn the mystery behind Pike’s story. “Pike knows a good leader has frailties, and publicly so,” explained Mount. “He knows his greatest asset is his crew. What I really like about playing this character is he’s not afraid to admit he’s stumped.” Additionally, Spock’s personal life is exposed in more detail.

The reveal of Spock’s new look at New York’s Comic Con already was a shock to fans with his facial hair and seemingly odd behavior – at least odd for Spock. Surprisingly, he seems emotional, and the trailer shows a wider spectrum of feelings such as through a smile at Captain Pike and a quivering voice when addressing his adopted sister. His words, however, turn out to be a crucial theme in the new series: “As a child, I had the same vision again and again. Now I understand its meaning, and where it must lead.”

Although many renditions of the Star Trek storyline have been made, this one is sure to be unique and to take its viewers boldly beyond where no man has gone before.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 will premiere Jan. 17, 2019 at 5:30 PM PT only on CBS All Access.
