

Sad news today, as the actress who played Mary Hartman in Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman Louise Lasser (Funny Pages, Bliss) has passed away. Lasser died of natural causes at her home in Manhattan.
For those who don’t know, Lasser was born in Manhattan on April 11, 1939 and grew up in the Bronx. Lasser’s acting career started after dropping out of Brandeis University. In the 1960s Lasser appeared in a sitcome called The Laughmakers. According to Deadline, Lasser would star in many other projects such as What’s New Pussycat? and What’s Up, Tiger Lily? where she did some voice over work. Lasser also stared in a variety of Woody Allen movies such as Take the Money and Run and Bananas and Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex (But Were Afraid To Ask). Allen and Lasser were married in 1966 and divorced four years later.
In 1976, Lasser would land her international debut when she stared in the series Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. The series told a story about an overly sheltered Ohio housewife who processes horrific events such as mass murder and serial adultery. The series lasted until July 1977 and was able to churn out 325 episodes. According to Deadline, Lasser suffered a nervous breakdown in a season ending episode that aired on national television. In May 1976, Lasser made headlines when she was arrested for having cocaine in her possession. Lasser was shopping at a Beverly Hills antiques district where she created a disturbance.
When the police were called, officers found 80 milligrams of coke in her purse. Lasser was sentenced to six months of probation and would later be placed under psychiatric treatment. Lasser also made waves during her time on as a host on Saturday Night Live. According to Deadline, cast members would complain that that she refused to appear in sketches and the episode rarely, she also had a spacey and quirky performance that labeled her as one of the worst hosts in the show’s early history.
