According to Deadline, Ryan Kiera Armstrong (Firestarter, American Horror Story), star of Hulu’s sequel series to Buffy The Vampire Slayer, discussed the bond she shares with co-star and original Buffy, Sarah Michelle Gellar (I Know What You Did Last Summer, Dexter: Original Sin). Armstrong spoke about Gellar’s support for her as production began earlier this year
“I can’t talk too much about Buffy, she’s just as lovely as she seems on camera. She’s such a great person. She went through Buffy. One of the first things she said to me was, ‘I will protect you. I’ll help guide you.’ It still gets me. I love Sarah,” Armstrong stated in a Collider interview. As Gellar’s successor, Armstrong appreciates having Gellar’s guidance. “With everything, I have someone to always go to now.”
According to Deadline, the original series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, ran from 1997 to 2003 on The WB/UPN. Based on the cult classic 1992 film, the show follows teenager Buffy Anne Summers, who, amidst homework and other teen angst, moonlights as deadly slayer, combating supernatural forces in her town of Sunnydale. The series spawned a spinoff, Angel, about Buffy’s on-again-off-again vampire love interest. In addition to returning to the series, Gellar is also an executive producer. Last May, Armstrong was announced as this generation’s new slayer. Additional cast members include Chase Sui Wonders (The Studio, Bodies Bodies Bodies), Merrin Dungey (The Lincoln Lawyer, Malcolm in the Middle), Audrey Hsieh (Found, Here Today), and Audrey Grace Marshall (The Flight Attendant, The Good Daughter)
Earlier this year, mxdwn reported that Gellar aimed to reprise characters — both alive and deceased — from the Buffy universe.”We will try to find balance between new and old characters,” Gellar stated via The Hollywood Reporter. “My dream is to bring back everyone who has died, but space will have to be made for new stories as well.”
Deadline reports that Chloe Zhao (Diablo IV: Saviors Wanted, A Clydesdale’s Journey) will direct the pilot, with writers Nora Zuckerman (Suits, Haven) and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D). Dolly Parton (Sant Stole Out Dog: A Metty Doggone Christmas, A Holly Dolly Christmas) will return as an executive producer with Gellar, Zhao, and both Zuckermans. The reboot will be produced under the Sanddollar Banner company.
